Muscle aches are the one people most often notice; they happen in a minority, are usually mild, and typically settle if we pause or switch the statin — serious muscle problems are very rare. On memory: large studies have not shown statins cause memory loss. On diabetes: there's a very small increase in risk, mainly in people already close to developing it, and it's far outweighed by the protection against heart attacks and strokes.
So what do they actually do for me?
They lower your cholesterol, which reduces the fatty build-up in your arteries, and they're one of the best-proven medicines we have for cutting the risk of heart attacks and strokes. For someone with your level of risk, that benefit is real and meaningful.
Couldn't I just sort out my diet and exercise instead?
Diet and exercise absolutely matter and I'd strongly encourage them — they lower your risk and are good for you all round. And would I be stuck on it forever?
